Located in the community of Haycock Point in Branford, our client’s seaside cottage afforded spectacular views of Long Island Sound. After purchasing an adjacent lot, deemed too small for a single-family house, a permit was granted to build a two-story addition to their home. The program for the addition, designed to resemble a classic carriage house, included an indoor swimming pool outfitted with a fully adjustable current system, a two-car garage, an artist’s studio over the garage, and an attached solarium arranged to form a private interior courtyard.

The form of the carriage house is in keeping with the scale and colonial character of the existing house, and features a gambrel roof and clapboard siding. An exterior balcony, supported by Stony Creek granite pillars is located on the gable end of the addition; it provides expansive views of Long Island Sound. The interior of the enclosed pool house features a vaulted ceiling finished with deeply stained cedar tongue and groove wood slats, which are illuminated by cove lighting around the perimeter. A series of sliding glass doors with transoms above provide ample natural light to the space. The pool is surrounded by slip resistant bluestone tile flooring, while the pool itself is clad in deep blue ceramic tile.
