St. Vincent’s Medical Center (SVMC), located in Bridgeport, CT is a Catholic hospital that has been serving its community since its founding by the Daughters of Charity in 1903. In 2019, SVMC became part of the comprehensive Hartford HealthCare network. To improve patient and visitor experience, JSA was tasked with the renovation of the hospital’s 8th-floor lobby entrance to The Neil and Diane Mellen Critical Care Unit.
In keeping with the patient-focused mission of St. Vincent’s, the interior fit-out of the 975 SF lobby was designed to offer a serene and calming place of respite for families and patients. Having previously completed numerous projects for Hartford Healthcare, JSA was familiar with the interior standards developed by the client, and the design team specified the finishes, materials, and fixtures to coordinate with the adjacent areas of the facility.
The programmatic requirements included a new ceiling, interior accent wall, lighting, doors, furniture, and finishes. The cherry veneer curved wall with concealed LED strip lighting features a floating shelf and an etched metal donor inscription. The elliptical ceiling and soffit are appointed with cove lighting and a large-scale recessed fixture to brightly light the space. The pattern in the resilient flooring forms the inverse of the curved soffit above. All furniture and finishes were specified to follow FGI guidelines and standards.
