Yale University commissioned JSA to conduct a complete renovation to the Department of Surgery’s Brady Memorial Laboratory (BML) in New Haven, CT. The 3,000 sq. ft. facility, which is part of the Yale School of Medicine, conducts research for the prevention and treatment various types of hearing loss, including the development of gene therapy procedures.

The facility includes spaces for microscopy, tissue culture, documentation, audio booth, autoclave, equipment, offices, corridors and toilet rooms. JSA met extensively with end users to ascertain programmatic requirements, lab configurations, and equipment criteria. Additionally, the design team oversaw the comprehensive coordination with MEP and FF&E consultants to provide optimal flexibility of the lab spaces.

The facility features resilient flooring and acoustic ceilings, which provide utility drop down connections allowing for maximum adaptability of lab operations. Adjustable benches and work stations are fully integrated with pressurized air, power and data. Interior laboratory walls are insulated with sound attenuating blankets to ensure acoustic control. The existing exterior masonry walls were insulated to improve thermal performance and comply with current energy codes.

Following Yale University’s commitment to sustainability, JSA specified numerous environmentally certified finishes including carpet tile with high recycled content and low VOC resilient flooring. To minimize energy consumption, occupancy and daylight sensors were installed with high performance LED fixtures. Temperature and occupancy sensors were also specified with the mechanical systems to increase energy efficiency.
