The Creative Future

The Farnam Memorial Building, located in New Haven, CT, houses laboratory spaces for the Department of Neurosurgery at Yale School of Medicine. In 2022, JSA was commissioned to design the 9,000 SF fourth floor renovation, transforming the existing facility into a state-of-the-art laboratory. The program included Bio-Safety Level 2 laboratories, autoclave/glass wash, tissue culture, surgery rooms, controlled environment room, microscopy, open offices, conference, and break room. All mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems were upgraded throughout the entire floor.

The project’s construction was phased to allow for the uninterrupted operation of lower floors, which are dedicated to surgery and medical research for the School of Medicine.

Exterior upgrades included replacement of the existing exterior windows with high performance thermally broken aluminum windows, and the addition of closed-cell insulation to improve the thermal efficiency of the building envelope. Additionally, exterior openings were structurally reinforced, and areas of damaged masonry were repaired and repointed.

JSA worked extensively with end users and preferred vendors to coordinate new casework and lab equipment, and furniture, and strictly adhered to Yale University’s design standards. JSA used advanced BIM technology to coordinate all project disciplines. As the School of Medicine required, the project successfully achieved LEED Gold certification.
