Once again, the historic 12,000 square foot Dean-Dawson House (c. 1837) has been adapted for reuse. Originally built as a private residence, the three-story Second Empire mansard-style home was repurposed as the Ronald McDonald House in 1985, and has most recently become the St. Raphael Campus employee day care center. The building is located two blocks from the St. Raphael campus and it serves families with children ages infant up through preschool age. Redesign of the facility included full interior renovation with new entry vestibule, lobby, lower level indoor play area, five infant / toddler rooms, a preschool room, nature room, conference room, kitchen / break room, and administrative offices.
The exterior of the building was fully restored in keeping with the historic aesthetic and it was enhanced with restored architectural detailing, trim work, exterior lighting, and copper roofs over the new egresses. JSA met extensively with the day care staff to ascertain end-user goals and to ensure the proposed design would accommodate the specific needs of the staff and families. The outdoor spaces feature age-appropriate playscapes and ADA-compliant ramps. The interior spaces feature maple millwork, brightly accented walls, patterned resilient flooring, whimsical acoustical clouds, and LED lighting.
