An existing building in New Haven’s historic Long Wharf district was identified as the perfect location to accommodate present requirements as well as future growth potential for the Yale New Haven Hospital Spine Center. Clinicians at the Spine Center focus solely on spinal disorders and provide surgical assessment and care for a variety of spinal ailments and injuries. The clinicians use a multidisciplinary approach to patient care that includes patient and family education, conservative treatment modalities, and as necessary, surgical intervention.
JSA provided interior fit-out design services within the existing building to accommodate the new 15,000 square foot Spine Center. The programmatic requirements included a multitude of functions including a dedicated fluoroscopy room, two radiation rooms, as well as twelve examination and private treatment rooms clustered around a central nurses’ station. The new conference room, which is equipped with a state of the art tele/data system, is provided with daylight accessed by the existing roof skylights. Physiotherapy is performed in a generously proportioned exercise area with an open floor plan to allow for flexible configurations of exercise equipment. A series of large windows provide patients and clinicians with views of the adjacent harbor and ample natural light. The facility is equipped with sophisticated diagnostic equipment, such as digital video cameras that perform video motion analysis and allow for frame-by-frame playback, thus providing a high level of patient treatment and physiological data to the clinicians. JSA worked extensively with end users to provide accommodations for specialized ceiling mounted equipment, specialty lighting, and appropriate furnishings to maximize clinical performance.
